Pops, Launch Control, and Shifts That Make Sense

Not every tune is about the spreadsheet. Some of it is how the machine sounds on decel, how it leaves a light, and whether the transmission finally shifts like it read your mind. All of that is calibration too.

The fun column: pops, burbles, launch control

Deceleration pops and burbles are a calibration choice — fueling and timing behavior on lift-off. Done tastefully, it’s character; done crudely, it’s obnoxious and hard on parts. We’re picky about it: it’s calibrated within sensible limits, matched to your exhaust, and dialed to the level you actually want — from subtle to unmistakable.

Launch control and two-step setups are the same discipline — controlled, repeatable behavior instead of hero-moment guesswork. Tell us what the car is for and we’ll calibrate to that.

The transmission is half the drivetrain

Some of the most satisfying calibration work never touches peak power: shift points that match how you actually drive, firmness that stops the slushy 1-2, converter lockup that behaves towing, manners in tow/haul mode, an Allison that holds gears like it should. On many platforms the TCM is its own computer with its own calibration — and it’s often tuned together with the engine for one coherent result.

If your complaint starts with “it always hunts between gears” or “it shifts like it’s asleep,” that’s not a personality trait. That’s tables.

What to tell us

Character is personal. That’s why it’s custom — and why revisions are free until it feels right.

Common questions

Will a crackle tune hurt my engine or exhaust?

Calibrated conservatively, decel pops are a controlled behavior. Cranked to the max on the wrong hardware, they’re hard on components — which is why we calibrate them within sensible limits and tell you honestly what your setup supports.

Can you tune just the transmission?

Yes. TCM-only calibration is real work we do — shift points, firmness, lockup strategy. Engine and transmission together usually gives the most coherent result, but it’s your call.

Do you tune Allisons?

Allison behavior — shift schedule, lockup, hold characteristics — is a regular request on work trucks, and yes.

My exhaust is stock. Can I still get the burble?

Some character is possible on stock exhaust, but the result depends heavily on your hardware. We’ll tell you what yours can honestly deliver before you spend anything.
